5 turbo side-by-side
« on: January 15, 2023, 06:07:12 pm »

K03 - K14 - T2 - K24 - T3
I probabaly don't understand turbos well enough but there must have been some reason for VW made them so big.

Similarly the k03 is tiny and it was used on 1.9td! while the k24/t3 are on 1600cc.

Question for 1.6's...if upping fuel/boost do the bigger turbos make more sense? More fuel = more exhaust = faster spool?

Is that your turbo collection? Or a picture of someone else's turbos?
Looks like there is a VNT-15 in there, maybe from a passat TDI.

I have used the big stock 1.6 turbos and couldn't get much boost out of them.
No matter how much fuel I added.
Even with the waste gate stuck closed.
I see others have done things to get some boost out of them, even up to 24 psi.
Like a bolt in the plate that clamps down on the waste gate and keeps it from opening.
They also provide more backpressure with a waste gate than with the vaned VNT turbos.
The big ones also provide more lag so you have the backpressure and no boost before 2000 RPM.

This my collection :) I have some VNT15's but not in this photo.

The 'middle ones' are the K14 (no. 028145703E) which came on some AAZ's up here in Canada but they are rare and the one with the manifold attached is the Garrett T2, another rarity, came on some Audi 80/90 diesels and apparently on some mk2 ecodiesels and yes, early Passats...in europe they were equipped on some mk2 GTD's. I believe the Garrett type is TBO218 or TBO261, VW part no. 028145703B. Both the K14 and T2 are missing wastegates, I have ordered aftermarket replacements, we will see how they perform but I am trying to track down an original Garrett replacement: https://www.turbosoutlet.com/actuator-tbo218. have not been able to find an original KKK wastegate.

The smallest one is a K03 which came on Canadian AAZ's...the gas version was commonly used on 1.8T's.

Here's a nice list of VW/Audi turbos:

I don't think the one in the middle is a T2.
I've been wrong before but I don't see a wastegate.
Not sure vaned turbos were available in the 90s.
It looks like a vaned turbo. It looks like a VNT.

I also have some spare 1.6TD turbos.
No K14s but I have a parts KKK,.. that's the one with the beehive type waste gate right?
Like the bottom one in the right picture?
I took it apart but it was probably fine and taking it apart made it lose balance.
Didn't know what I was doing.

I can't remember what vehicle you are putting these in.
Can you put your vehicle/project in your sig?

That's a nice list of turbos, I'd like to try a VNT-17 on the M-TDI but am not sure what engines they came on in the US.

Pics of the T2 with wastegate reconnected...this particular one came on an early passat...the ex mani look like a regular 1.6TD but has an extra EGR port..no thanks.

So the K24 I have is clocked a little differently than the rest. The label is hard to take a picture but here's what is says:
068145703D
833150819
53249706080

I will be putting the T2 on my 90 1.6TD with Giles pump...the one that I had the belt break on if you recall late last spring, red Jetta.

The k14 will go on the 1.6D block I have in the other thread. The T3 and K24 are for sale.

I found some 1.6td intake manifolds...$40cdn from my but WITHOUT the rubber hose...these are apparently hard to find ATM.

i think vw originally used the bigger turbos because in the late 70s and early 80s that's really all there were for "small" turbos. i think a vnt15 will flow close to a t3 or k24 but they definitely do flow more at the cost of spool time. depending on the car its a great sacrifice if its something light like a mk1 or mk2, on a heavier vehicle you probably want the smaller turbos.
