About to get 1.6D block bored for turbo
« on: January 14, 2023, 06:21:44 pm »
Anything i should check?

Going .5 over with Prothe pistons...im 99% sure they are same as P-Place and talking to them apparently they have worked fine. They are turbo skirted but i dont think that makes a difference.

Measured the bores with the telescopic bore gauges but measures came out consistently on the small side, i think its the nature of the tool. The ridges on top are minor and all bores are ovalized by about 0.08.

Never done this before so any help is appreciated. Deck looks good, all fasteners came out cleanly. Vac pump was pretty worn where it meets the oil pump, will need to hunt one down otherwise i fairly clean looking block methinks.

Is the best approach to weld/fasten in a bung on the pan? Where do i get a fitting that works? TD motors are scarce...ive yet to see a single one at a boneyard and ive been everywhere.

Pistons for refernence.

For the turbo oil return bung you just have figure out what you want.
AN or compression. Stock is compression but I think AN seals better.
Get a 90 and weld it high on the pan between 2 bolts so the oil pan bolts go on easy.
I use silicone heater hose for the turbo drain.

Someone tried Prothe pistons and said the rings are junk so you might want to get better rings like grant, hastings or goetz.

TY, good info. I will need to find an oil drain line as well. The secret is PP has them but only if you call them :) They fit the stock compression style.

In terms of supply, can I drill and tap and the NA oil cooler/filter flange?

If it's just a stock turbo I might have all that stuff.
Oil pan, oil drain, oil filter mount and oil line to the turbo.

I don't run the stock turbos anymore and have a few spare parts.
Those aren't rare parts like the intake, 90 or exhaust manifolds.

If interested send me a PM and I'll check the pile.

Id like to run a k14 or T2 with stock boost. lll have to check the oil drains but i know the T2 has an odd threaded one.

Which intakes are the hardest to find? I suppose the k14 would be the most useful but is the stock 1.6td k24 different?

I really appreciate the offer, the oil block would be great at least, u can get back to you on the rest after I figure out what turbo im using.

What turbos do you use for 1.6builds?

I switched to the VNT-15s, from the MK4 TDIs. They are good to 15psi or up to 18 for short while.
That seems to keep the EGTs at 1200F when floored for extended times.
And they reduce back pressure, which is good for head gaskets

Oil block = the piece the the oil cooler and filter connect to.

It seems good vacuum pumps that dont have worn out slots are not easy to come by.

Intake manifolds: I assume we're talking about 1.6TD intakes being hard to find? I dont know if Canadian AAZ manifolds are different?

AAZ has D-shaped ports. They don't match up to the 1.6 head but I've heard people have bolted them on and they worked.

I guess I've been calling that piece the oil filter mount.

The old diaphram style vacuum pumps are working better than my vaned ones
but they need that hose to the block and I'm using that spot for an extra PCV hose.

Right, the 1.6TD intakes are hard to find for cheap.
The VNT-15 hangs down low enough that I can even use a gasser long runner intake.
Another benefit of the VNT-15.
And they spool up at low RPMs.
