1.6NA frankenhead condition assessment
« on: January 14, 2023, 01:50:43 pm »
Hello again folks

So I'm helping a vw/audi mech clear out some of his parts inventory and finding some 1.6 stuff including this super low mile head that's been converted to hold an AAZ valve cover. How do i find caps for this head that might work?

There are some strange peening marks on some of the valves...any insight on what these might be?

Lastly, there are some gouges in the deck from storage and moving...how bad are these in terms of running this head? Also some of the precups seem to have been ground down? The head i really dont think has been resurfaced because all the precups protrude 'a few thou' and dont share the milling pattern on the head. I mean it couldve been but it looks factory to me.

Do the gouges in the deck look like they are in line with the sealing ring of the head gasket?

I traced the circles with a gasket i had on hand. This is between cyl 2&3. The big one is well outside, the smaller one is close, and there's a medium-light scratch that goes right across

Im going to check valves to make sure there hasnt been contact but I really want to try to running this head.

Any insight on the marks on the valves?

Whats the best way to match cam caps? I have a few 1.6 heads to choose from.

You can set cam caps in place and feel for an edge where they meet. Caps can go on either way to make them match.
After you have selected good ones put the cam in, torque it down and see how hard it turns.
If it is too tight turn the cam and remove the shiny part of the cap with sandpaper.
When it starts to move easily enough use plastigauge to find the clearance.
If any of them are too loose use sandpaper on glass to remove some from the bottom flats of the cap.

Marks on the valves might have been a glow plug tip or something small fell in the cylinder

Thanks for this guide, I will try to make this head work.

The gouge and scratch close to the sealing ring...is it worth it to try to fill it with something? I know the epoxy used on concrete warehouse floors is extremely hard, maybe that? or just sand and hope?

Hard to tell with a pic.
It doesn't look very deep and it doesn't go all the way to the coolant passage.
The head gasket sealing ring might be able to seal it.
