1.6 CY TD or 1.9TD aaz?
« on: October 22, 2022, 06:18:43 am »
So for now i have a NA 1.6 ive turboed with all stock td parts except IP and injectors. Gov mod, intercooler, 60mm exhaust, 1.5bar k24, 800c in third at 5k, bigger rad.. It can keep up with 1.9tdis but i want more, because ive read that it can do more power.
I have a spare CY TD that i took those parts off, it's a good engine. The reason i didn't do the engine swap is because of paper work.
But now after more than a year i want more power. So what would you recommend 1.6 or 1.9. I'm sticking with IDI so TDI for now is not an option.
If 1.6 im thinking of putting a 1.9 head on it?

Looking forward to your opinion and experiences!

Stay with the 1.6.
With a good VNT-15 turbo you should get plenty of power.
The stock turbo is really slow to kick in and slow to produce boost.
And remember with the IDI too much power will throw a prechamber..

If you put a 1.9 head on it you will get low compression and hard starts.
Hard to believe how much larger the prechambers are on a 1.9.

 Where are you at?
In Canada they have more 1.9s and parts available.

Im in Bosnia, but thanks. 1.6 and 1.9 TDs are everywhere here for 100-150bucks complete.

What would be the advantages disadvantages going with 1.6 or 1.9? I know that 1.6 likes revs more and with 1.9 head i could boost it past 2bar(29psi). What would i gain with extra displacement if i went with 1.9.

I'm not real familiar with the 1.9.
I figure it gets less MPG.

I think my 1.6 has all the power it needs, with the right turbo.
I can get some really nice 1st and second gear scratches.

Remember the 1.9 crank sprocket is famous for letting go.
It uses the same lame key as the 1.6 but the serpentine belt grips enough that the alternator pushes the engine backward when letting off.
This causes the crank sprocket to get pushed back and forth.
The V belt on the 1.6 doesn't grab the crank sprocket as hard.
But I did get a free MK2 Jetta when the crank sprocket let loose of the crank.

The cure is to use the early TDI crank sprocket and put a matching flat spot on the crank.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with the 1.6 CY block and 1.9 head. It's gonna be a slow project as spare cash and time comes by.

And one more thing. Would i gain anything by swapping my NA pump with a TD pump and injectors ,or is it a waste of time?

You'd have less smoke without boost with the TD pump.
I'm not sure if the higher breaking pressure on TD nozzles affects performance.
But there is probably a reason for it.
So I would suggest using injectors with the higher breaking pressure for a TD.
