Normal coolant temp range
« on: June 01, 2022, 08:30:56 pm »
Where on the mk2 temp gauge do these engines usually run. Mine gets to about the middle of the light before the fan will kick on which seems to be just past half way. It normally stays just below or just touching the light. When i turn all the lights on and the blower fan itll stay running about half way or torwards the end of the light on the temp gauge

Thats the good operating range, 83-97 C is normal. Although VW book says that normal operating range is between the left and right white line. Mine is dead on middle. Only when i push it hard does it cross the middle, but it comes back real quick. Sometime when coasting downhill itll go left of the light, basically until the thermostat closes which mine does at 83C.

I don't like the gauges with the little lines in them. I have them working but I rely on some "real number gauges" I converted my water temp gauge in the cluster to show me the oil temp instead.  I just put the sensor on the oil filter flange as there was a port for it.  So between the water temp bumping between 187 and 193 before the fan kicks in and the oil temp riding a bit to the left of center on the cluster gauge I can judge if the engine is hot or just getting warmed up.

As the owner's manual states, the temperature can range up to the 3/4 mark on the gauge during normal operation and heavy load.  That is nothing to worry about unless the coolant begins boiling or the led starts blinking.
