Solid Head Lifter Shim Spacing Question
«

Greetings,
I have been in the process of measuring my shim clearances in my 87 JX 1.6td. The only problem child is #3 intake valve. I have just about 0.05mm of clearance between the shim and the cam lobe with the lobe at a 45* upward angle (ie both valves in the closed position). The manual shows that spec should be 0.15-0.025mm for a cold motor. All of my other intake valves are at 0.15mm. I removed the shim and it shows as a 3.90mm shim. I measure with a caliper and the caliper shows 3.90mm dead on. So what gives? Could someone have messed up? I suspect I should get another shim, one that is 3.75mm thick and call it a day. I just wanted to run it by you folks first ans get your thoughts.
Cheers,
Justin

Sometimes a person's math skills fail them. Just get the proper shim and call it fixed.

First off I have always pointed the cam lobe straight up when time to measure.
So I looked and you are right, according to the manual both lobes are supposed to be up.
and ORCoaster is right .15mm minus .05 equals .10mm.
That's .10mm less than 3.9mm.
Which means you might need a 3.8mm shim.
A pretty common shim.

Thank you both, I ordered a 3.70 and a 3.80 just in case. This has been holding me up for some time. Much obliged!

3.8 and 3.75 are the ones most likely to solve the problem.
