Gear Oil recommendations
« on: October 25, 2021, 10:20:02 pm »

I can't believe how clean the inside of this transaxle is.
300k.......     I would like to put in new gear oil, being that
I drained out the old due to installing new clutch etc. etc.
What is the general consensus recommendation on  gear oil.. Brands... and Visco.....
         It's a 92 with the fivespeed...

thanks, Monst

Personally I use sta-lube 85w-90 from NAPA because it comes in a gallon container and is GL-4 rated. I live in newengland and during the winter I let the car warm up awhile before driving anywhere

I think it depends on your transmission.  Best to look it up.  I think I bought two quarts a bit ago and used maybe 1.5?  Not sure but the Valvoline brand came in these nice foldable packages.  Nice for use in a tight spot.

Lot of people used to recommend Redline MTL.
Make sure your flange seals are good.
I remember a friend filling his trany and having that red stuff run right out the flange seals and onto the floor.

Yeah, I can see that with the MTL....... it is a little thinner....

I think I have some   MT-90  I can get tomorrow.....(that is what they said) actually two places.

Yeah, Had the tranny out so  installed  drive flange seals....    Did all the seals..
Hoping for a leak proof scenario....  Get this puppy running again.....

If you ever have trouble with the hockey puck seals on the transmission permatex 2a works wonders for keeping them in place

GTK.....  Yeah, I heard that they can sometimes leak.....
Yeah, tranny is all sealed up with new seals. I cleaned off
all the grunge, hopefully it stays that way. I can better see
where problem leaks are now(and hopefully there are none/less)....
I didn't put on a new oil pan gasket. I did a new
valve cover gasket and did a new seal on the vacuum pump.
I just have to throw on some tires and lower it. I ran it to
operating temps  twice now(up on the jack stands) she
seems pretty happy, though I have to get a new exhaust flange
made.... So at the moment I am running an open exhaust(somewhat).

The rubber valve and oil pan gaskets from a 2.0 ABA block are a nice upgrade to the cork and pieces valve cover gasket.

I've used Lucas synthetic for the last several years and am happy with it.  NAPA carries it.

I run a mix of redline MTL and MT-90 due to something I read on here years ago. It works good, very thin and at -40 it shifts like butter. It used to stall at -30 with dino 75w-90.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
