Best small turbo for a 1.9 IDI
« on: September 04, 2021, 10:54:50 pm »
So the turbo in Vanomo might need replacing. Now that I have the money to do that properly what's the optimum turbo that I can easily swap in? Not sure what I put in 15 years ago when I installed the  engine but I've been relatively happy with it.

If it doesn't fit force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway!

If you have been happy with the performance, then the easiest way to proceed would be to find out what turbo you have and replace it.

So my 1.9 IDI has the K14 turbo.
These are the symptoms: zero boost until 2500rpm and then only under full throttle, and then only 4-5 pounds. Without boost the engine runs like crap and lots of unburned fuel smoke. Cruising at a steady 65 mph-zero boost. Previously at that speed the turbo produced about 4 psi.
It was making good boost (up to 15psi) until a month ago or so. Then one day I noticed zero boost on the gauge. So I figured the plastic pressure line had been cut at some point and sure enough it was a couple of inches from the manifold. So I fixed the line but still no boost.
My kid says stuck wastegate or cracked manifold or blown shaft seals.
I don't remember the history on this turbo except to say it's been on the engine pretty much untouched for 20 years or so. And I think it might have come off a 1.6 td that I was running in an old Vanagon.
I see K14's advertised on Ebay for less than $300 but the application is the 1.6td motor.
So is that the same turbo that would have come on the 1.9 idi td engine?

Your kid is on the right track.  Likely stuck wastegate.  You could spray some lube into the porta and try to free it up.

The K14 that came on the 1.9's has a larger compressor wheel than the version on the 1.6TD engines.  The 1.6TD version would work but would be less desirable on the 1.9.

Well where could I buy the K14 that would have come on a stock 1.9IDI?
The K14 turbo that's on there now had previously been on a 1.6td. When I swapped in the bigger 1.9td (from German Auto maybe) it was basically a long block and I just grabbed the turbo off the smaller motor and bolted that on there. Ditto the pump probably. I know I had the pump rebuilt at some point but definitely not the turbo.
So where can I get the bigger compressor wheel turbo?

I'm not aware of a source for new ones.  Post up some wanted ads on various forums?
