82 Diesel Rabbit with Seized Engine
« on: August 03, 2021, 11:19:34 am »
Hello all, this is my first post on here.

Long story short, I acquired an 82 VW diesel Rabbit. I thought the head gasket was only busted blown, but when I got it home I tried turning the crank and it appears the engine is seized.

At this point, I'm assuming the bottom end is not worth rebuilding and looking into engine swap ideas. So here are my questions: 1) should I be looking for a diesel swap - in other words, is it more trouble than it's worth converting the car to a gas engine, 2) what is the best / easiest engine swap option? Thanks!

Well, the 82 Rabbit diesel was a 1.6 correct?

So why not search out another, check to see if it runs, or rebuild it and put it in the engine bay in place of the one you have that is FUBAR?

So yes, look for another diesel 1.6 and swap it.  No need to get into the gas engine stuff as the diesel is superior in more ways than one can count.  The bias here towards heavy oil machines.

The best/ easiest swap is another 1.6 or a 1.6 with a turbo.
