'05 MK4 Golf TDI Engine Swap into '79 MK1 Rabbit Body
« on: July 19, 2020, 01:07:36 pm »
A few years ago my '79 MK1 Rabbit (not diesel) was having a lot of issues and became an unreliable daily, I found a great deal on a '05 MK4 Golf TDI and snagged it up and have loved it ever since. Recently given all the extra time we've been given I was thinking about taking the TDI and dropping it into the Rabbit.

For reference, I have done swaps before and would say I have an intermediate level of mechanical knowledge. Researching on TDIclub has just made me scatterbrained about the whole idea.

I found a conversion kit that should allow me to do that, from Eurowise, but I have never done a swap like this and was wondering if anyone had done this before (a TDI to gas swap). Is there anything else I would need to consider?

I read UNRELIABLE 79, and an 05 that you love.  Seems a waste of time to move that engine to an older frame that may not support it well.

If you have time on your hands spend it on the 05.  Or selling the 79.  Why make life hard on yourself?

Because it'd be really cool and the Rabbit body is amazing. Also I'm dumb.

If there is nothing wrong with the 05 keep the engine in the car. Find a used 1.6 engine for the 79 rabbit  :)
