Aaz engine questions
« on: May 09, 2020, 12:29:46 pm »
Hello all, yesterday I purchased an aaz engine out of a 96 Jetta to replace the one in my samurai that the crank seized up.

The engine I bought has been sitting out of the car for 3 years or so according to the owner. It supposedly ran well when pulled, I know that's a gamble but for the $150 I payed I'll take the chance.

It was nicely plugged up with rags and not exposed to the elements which is good. I'm going to replace the front and rear crank seals as they show signs of past leakage, timing belt and idlers, and it appears the crank pulley has already been pinned. Is there anything else I should investigate/have a look at while the engine is out and easily accessible?

upon further inspection the fuel injectors are missing the lines between them and the feed lines from the missing pump are also open to the world. Is there a process to clean them out? Or is it necessary at all other than lightly blowing out with some compressed air. I've been working on gasoline engines of all kinds for most of my life but am brand new to the diesel world so my apologies if these questions are basic haha

If the metal lines have been open I usually spray some WD-40 or similar through them and then compressed air.  I would do similar for the small nipples on the injectors.

If you replace the "OUT" banjo bolt with a regular banjo bolt,
huge amounts of fuel will go through the pump and back to the tank.
I suppose that would flush anything
that got in through the open input
right back to the tank and back through the filter.

Then replace the "OUT" bolt because it won't run well that way.
