I've just finished tying up the loose ends on my swap project, at least well enough so it's driveable. I'm thrilled because after working on the car every day and sorting out all sorts of silly little issues it decided to throw my way, it actually can be used for its intended purpose. Tomorrow I try and take it to work, 40 miles each way of high speed highway driving, and crawling bumper to bumper traffic in 90 degree heat (good thing the a/c's really cold). We'll see if I make it there :)

Only things left to do are:
-Fix tach and eternally flashing low coolant light (might need a new cluster)
-install power steering pump.

Oh and and coming up soon will be some mods, because man, this thing is slow :). I'll get used to it, but damn... At least it seems to hold 70mph ok but it definitely needs some oomph. If I can get it to be as powerful as the gas 8v I'll be perfectly happy.

Anyway, thanks everyone for all your help. It is very much appreciated. I couldnt have done this without the info on this wonderful board

Oh and before I break rule #1:

I made it to work :)

53 miles and the fuel guage didnt move a hair. :)

Only issue is the alternator belt is a bit loose (it beat the snot out of the upper timing cover) and it's at the end of it's adjustment. I'm going to try and find a shorter belt. It was a pleasant 70F this morning so I drove with the a/c off, and the acceleration is really not that bad. That is, on the highway it dosent have any trouble doing whatever speed I want. I was doing 80mph for a short while relatively comfortably. I believe I can eek a little more power out if it because it dosent smoke at all. No matter if I floor it, lug it, redline it, whatever, there is no smoke at all. So I can probably richen things a bit and get some more power which it will definitely need with the a/c running.

In regards to the A/C eating too much HP, there is a modification you can do. MkIs with the upshift light came with a switch on a little bracket affixed to the injection pump. When you step on the accelerator, it made the upshift light go out. You could adapt this to shut off the A/C compressor. So during hard acceleration the A/C shuts off and then automatically comes back on when you let off the pedal.

Many cars come from the factory with a feature like this. I think diesel VWs should have too.

It's not really a big deal. I drove with the a/c on for most of the way home and I got used to it. It's a good excuse to mod it for more power though :).

Oh and I'm at 115 miles now, and the fuel gauge still hasent moved :). I love it.

I find that my fuel gauge doesn't move very quickly from full until it reaches about half... then it starts to go down pretty fast.  Doesn't really help for accurately measuring mpg :(

same with mine, but you really shouldn't use the fuel gauge as any sort of way to keep track of your fuel mileage
