1.6 Crank Sprocket Bolt and Washer
« on: October 07, 2019, 05:20:36 pm »

Can anyone confirm if the washer is supposed to have a matching pattern where the bolt is serrated? I don’t think it should since the bolt is already serrated and would need to bite into the washer. I’m doubting myself because of the following picture from another 1.6 D.

Anyone? The bolt and washer I’ve seen from a 1.5 were just a flat washer and neither were serrated.

My Crank has the smaller nose, so I need an M12 bolt. What I have is NLA. I tried a few sellers but they all came back with nothing.

I may just use what I have. Possibly use a version of loctite on it to give me some sense of security. I’d just like to know how hard I need to pray.

I just checked in my assortment of bolts.  I have 4 old-school hex head VW diesel bolts.  3 of them have no serrations on either bolt or washer.  One of them has serrations on both the bottom of the bolt and on the side of the washer that faces the head of the bolt.

To be clear, the bolts I described were specifically old crank sprocket bolts.  I didn't state that clearly in my post.  My take is that the serrations probably don't matter much.

Thanks for your clarification. Well, I should feel lucky I have a bolt and washer or I’d be chasing a pair down. I probably would have found a crank with the larger nose to use if I had realized these parts were NLA. Bentley states 111 ft lbs torque for the bolt I have. It also mentions using loctite but only on the 1.5 D bolt.

Doesn't sound like you'd have to chase very far,..
since Libby has some he'll never use he he.
If I remember right length of the bolt matters more than serrations on the washer.
They didn't always use the washer and the bolt for that crank is a different length.

Thanks for volunteering Libby’s stash.

Yeah, my bolt is 45mm long. The 12 point 14M replacement bolt is 47mm. But the later Crank Sprocket has a deeper nose and there is no washer needed.

I torqued it on this weekend. 111 ft lbs. Didn’t seem like a lot of force needed, but I used the larger 1/2 wrench so maybe the leverage makes all the difference.
