master acid: as suggested, just pop the axle off the car and do it in a vice or something. it would be more effort than its worth trying to do it in-car, although i'm sure with enough swearing it could be done. this really isn't that hard a job once you get familiar with it. once you do, you can pop off an axle in 5 or 10 minutes with someone helping.

i pulled the axles and put it in a vise. gave the outer joint a good wack with a hammer and nothing happens. seems to be stuck or something.

sweet this is just the post i was looking for... i had a brake caliper lock up on me while on the highway, load of fun at 70mph, it toasted most things in there and then looks like the boot cooked split and dumped the nasty grease all over the passenger wheel.  sigh... plus i think the drive seal is leaking anyway, so thanks for all the post info on here it should make my weekend go much more smoothly!
