My firtst 1.9 IDI
« on: July 16, 2019, 02:10:02 pm »
I'm sticking a 1.9 head on the already frankened 1.7 block.
The AAZ head didn't come with a valve cover, can I use a TDI valve cover?
I've heard I can drill and tap the holes for a 1.6 valve cover,... if I have to.

Also searching for the proper metal head gasket.
 Searched using a '96 Jetta.
NAPA and Oriellys are no help.
Autohaus only shows TDI gaskets even though I searched for AAZ block stuff..
Rock auto only shows composite gaskets or metal TDI gaskets.
Where can I get another metal AAZ head gasket?

Also if I get a head gasket kit with the valve seals,.. what size are AAZ valve stems?

Here are the numbers off the old metal elring head gasket:
214848 210707
The head gasket needs to be for a 1.9 because the 1.7 pistons are 80mm wide.

EL914.848 seems to be a good elring number for a head gasket.
I can't find a 1 notch gasket in the US.
Anyne bought stuff on german ebay?
How does that work when you can't speak german?

028 383 103 BH might be the VW number.
I haven't checked the dealership yet.

Any way to get one from Canada?

 Hey, thanks for that info.
I checked at the local dealership and they can't find any 1 hole AAZ head gaskets in North America.
They can order one for $70 but it's from overseas and no idea when it will arrive.

I have found a head gasket at rock auto.
Mahle makes a composite one instead of the metal head gasket.
 part number: 54434

I knew the prechambers were cracked in the 1.6 head I had in there.
When I pulled the head, prechambers were so loose I could jiggle them with my fingernail.
One fell out when I was hammering on something.

Cleaned the 1.9 and found cracked prechambers on that one too.

A few years ago I pulled several warped and cracked heads apart and stacked them in the scrap pile.
I made sure to remove the prechambers. Especially on heads that hadn't been surfaced.
Good thing I did because mechanical head 1.6 prechambers fit the 1.9 quite well.
And 1.5 prechambers fit the hydraulic 1.6 diesel head.

The 1.9 AAZ does have bigger prechambers but it's not the part that gets removed, it's cast into the head.
 Probably twice the size.

So for the head gasket. I'll order one of the composite ones from rockauto for $40 and put this engine back together.
And order a metal one from the dealership so I have one,... in case I need to go back to the 1.6.

oops.
The Mahle composite gasket info says it has piston holes that are 79.91 across.
 These pistons are 79.98.

So the only option is the metal elring gasket. #914.848.
I ordered one from the dealership and the plan is to spray some hylomar and reuse the metal gasket.
It will probably leak but it needs to be up and moving. I need the space it's in.

Hi Fatmobile -

Maybe try this guy in Thailand for a one-hole MLS headgasket for your 1.9L IDI, engine code AAZ...he seems to be up for just about anything - - at least that his tooling allows!!   His workmanship looks more than adequate to my eyes.

Please see      https://gasketstogoblog.com/2010/02/06/mls-gasket-for-1985-vw-1-6-l-turbo/

This design maybe can be converted to the cylinder bore size that you need.   A MLS gasket from him would also need the second oil return as used on hydraulic lifter heads added.

i'm probably too late to help you, but i have a few aaz valve covers and i would sell.

napa can definitely get aaz parts, i've ordered a valve cover gasket, precups, and a headgasket from them before, but you need to have the part numbers because they may not have the stuff listed, that or the sales people don't know enough to differentiate the parts from a tdi to a aaz. napa has an "altrom" line of parts that carries lots of vw parts.

a lot of the aaz stuff is available here because of the industrial and marine uses of that engine.

NAPA did have a composite gasket.
Rock auto sold the same  one and listed that the holes for the cylinders were too small for the pistons.
How much for a aaz valve cover?
Because i was in a hurry and didn't have the 1.9 valve cover, I just put the 1.6 head back on with the reused gasket and  newish prechambers.
