Is the radiator roughly the same size? Any reason it would not work? Anywhere I can find a good used one for relatively cheap?
My single rad fan is starting to make noise at high speed, and the high speed function doesn't seem to be coming on sometimes (engine is getting a little too hot on the highway)
The dual fans just seem like the better choice. Instead of having one big power sucking fan that needs to run at a high speed, you get two smaller fans which have a greater lifespan.
Use a 2.0 16 V for a similar yeared Passat, it's a dual fan, plugs into your fan switch, and fit's exactly onto the Rad of your TD.

Dual fans aren't truely "dual fans".
One fan motor and a belt going to the other fan.
I have a passat dual fan on my '91 Golf.
Just checked and yes, the 2nd fan is driven by a belt (looked like a motor, but then again I did not get a good look at it). It must cool much better though.. no hot spots on the rad

The list price for the passat fans is about $700... I'll stick with my single fan  unless I can find one at the junkers or for cheap.
I got my fan to start coming on properly now though... I just had to clean the contacts on the temp sensor, and I bled out my coolant system again.
It was awhile before I realised there was a skinny little belt running the second fan too.
I got mine for around $80 shipped from someone on the vortex.
Glad you got it figured out but I did just see one on the vortex for $50.
