first off the light will not go away unless cleared with a Vagcom. I havn't found any other generic scan tool that can do it either.

The light may indicate a circuit fault usually. In my case it was a broken wire.
Check that all the wiring under both front seats (yellow connectors) are connected and visually don't see and broken wires.
I had a broken wire under the driver seat, must have been pinched somehow.
Make sure you disconnect the battery when working with airbag systems!!

Yeah, disconnecting the battery for 15 min is not the correct solution... try VAG-COM first... I've had to do that for a TDI today and it was a snap. In the vag-com screen click [Airbags], click [Fault Codes], then finally [Clear Codes].

If the airbag light reappears then check the circuit as shox75 stated.

My wife's airbag light is on. It came on when she ran into the receiver hitch of an suv and stuck it through the front bumper cover. She took it to the vw dealer today---they told her it was her seat belt not sending a signal to the airbag and would cost $433 to repair. She brought it home cause we were a little financially challenged after the $260 MAS they installed to correct the loss of power and the $90 fee to tell her it was the seatbelt causing the airbag light to come on. I'll check for loose or broken wires tomorrow---any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated. What is a vagcom?
