Sounds like a creaking when the steering wheel is turned either way originating from somewhere under the hood. Car has sat for years without moving. Drilled out the steering tie rod ends for grease zerks. But noise remains. Any suggestions?
pull the rack boots in and check the inners for lack of lube. also the bearing in the shock tower, and the balljoint by the front discs.
Thanks MA, I will check the strut mount bearings, but the noise seems lower; granted the noise may be resonating to a different location. I also drilled and tapped the lower ball joints for zerk fittings so I don't think that is a problem area. It almost seems that it could be in the lower steering column bearing? where it meets the rack. I don't see any possibility to lubricate this area.
i dont really know how to lube that part. maybe you could squirt it with penetrating oil.
