increased fueling, wanna make sure i'm in check

today i finally decided to turn up the fueling, and wow what a difference, i really wish i would have done it sooner because it increased the drivability of the car alot.  i have no tach so i couldn't increase fueling by the engine rpm, so i decided to go by half turns, and i only did 1 half turn.  the turbo spools much more quickly, and i see a peak boost of 22 psi in 3rd gear (closed wastegate) it could be higher but even if it is i'm not gonna let it go that high as i have no intercooler.  but here is the question at hand, the car barely smokes now, am i completely safe as far as egt go?  with only a half turn above stock fueling i feel safe (my tires don't) but i just wanna make sure.  whats everyone else have to say?

drove it some more, the motor isn't running any warmer and could get a peak boost of 20 psi now, which makes me a little happier, i'm not gonna touch it till i get an intercooler now...

  A pyro is only $150.  I work for a diesel performance company and I sell a pyro like an insurance policy.  The only way to really know if you are safe or not is to run the gauge.  My 1.9 the pump has been turned up a bit and I have 2.5" exhaust with a cold air intake.  I dont have much smoke once the boost comes up. I run about 24psi at wot.  My temps post turbo can hit about 900deg, which is starting to get a little warm.  I am going to run an intercooler and a water meth kit to help that and make some more ponies.  
  I guess what I am saying is if you are going to play with the fuel, get a pyro!!!!

What type of cold air intake do you have? I have a 1989 jetta 1.6td I am always looking for more hp, I have done the 2.5 downpipe and full exhaust getting a giles pump then will put my boost controller on turn up the boost to 20psi. I have an egt guage and boost guage.

Great thread. I did some tuning this weekend, Increased the fuelling a bit but I don't think I'm getting enough boost. I'm going to add a bleed valve in the next couple weeks. In the meantime, I'm getting up to 1300* pre-turbo, but that's only on long, hard uphill runs. Generally 900- 1100 on the highway under load. Is that safe?

1300 Pre turbo is about all you want to go with.  This usually equates to about 1000deg post turbo.  That is starting to get pretty hot.  I wouldnt want to be there all day long, but shorter runs at that temp you are going to be ok.

The intake I have made myself.  I am using a AFE Progaurd 7 filter.  Then I (I mean the guys that fab our pickup truck airboxes) made the box and tubing.  A
  Any time you can get more air into a diesel the better it is going to run.  Think of it as a giant air pump.  The more air in and out the better your engine is going to run.

westach egt guages are like 50 bux at aircraftspruce.com
mine reads from 100-1900f
the probes are seperate+ range from 20 to 30 bux
so like 80-85 bux,you are in there

i was thinkin to get a dual scale egt guage from them,that way i can read pre+post turbo on the same guage
those guages are more dough
but for 150 you could get one of these,and 2 probes
instead of an autometer,which ive had 2 of those go out......

That looks kind of ugly.  We have seen worse here, but that has definately been a little warm.  The big thing that helps out as well is to let the car cool down before you shut it off.  When you shut them down hot, the oil lube stops bearing are very hot.  This can cause deposits to build up, but you also get a dry start on the bearings which cuts the life of the turbo.
