--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All,

I've recently came to the conclusion that I'd like a IDI VW 4 cyl. to play with and learn with. My question though is about the engine mounts of the 1.6L. Are they the same as a 1.7L from a Rabbit? The real reason for this question is, I'd like to mount a 1.6L VW diesel into a Dodge Omni. I like Omnis, am very familiar with them. I have a gas turbo model already, I think a diesel one would be pretty nifty, too. The original engine for a Dodge Omni was a 1.7L 'Rabbit' engine, however, it was carburated (no holes in head for injectors). My feeling is, if the 1.6L diesel and 1.7L gas have the same mounts then, in theory, I might be able to put the 1.6L diesel in the Omni! Provided I buy the 1.7L mounts that is.

Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

That sounds like a cool project, jbg.

My impression is that the counts are probably the same. Certainly the mounting bosses are the same, as the diesel and gas blocks are virtually identical (externally). If you have an Omni with motor mounts, my guess is that the engine would be a drop-in.

JBG, does the Omni use a Rabbit (020) tranny as well? I'm really looking for some info on where to find a 3.42 Ring and Pinion for a VW 5-speed, any hints?

VWRacer: Yes I too think it'll be a neat project. I'm going to see if I can get some mounts from the local parts place for a 1.7L Omni, then maybe find a diesel in a yard and compare notes.

Greasemonkey: According to my Chilton manual the manual transaxle for that engine is a 4 speed, I believe Chrysler calls it a A-412? There is possibly one other too, but I'd have to check when I get home. As for final drive ratios, R&P etc I'd have to see what I can find. I have a few buddies who work at Chrysler dealerships, maybe I can pick some brains for you.

Tranxaxle questions are next on the list. If the Omnis w/1.7L power used a VW transaxle (most likely) it really opens up some possibilities. Oh, and the 1.7L in the Omnis had an automatic transaxle option too, called the A-404, 3 speed auto, built by Chrysler.

I had one recently that I sold to Mr. Dave. I think he said at the time (several months, maybe a year ago...) when he looked, that none were readily available.

I bought my 3.42 R&P years ago from techtonics; they had it on their shelf. I remember that autotech used to advertise them for sale also and they were listed as one of the gears available through VW Motorsports / Quaife (which autotech is the importer of.) so you might check with those 2 places. Who knows maybe one cropped up on their shelves or maybe Autotech can special order them?

Rumor has is that that some 020 transmission was found in a Dodge Omni that came with a low-ratio R&P, which may work in an VW transverse-mount 020 application. I can't vouch for whether this is true or not though, and I have not heard from anyone who has successfully done this swap before.

Autotech now has a 3.32 R&P available, but it's for the later style 020 trannies (16V or A3/mk3 models). If memory serves, the 16V trannies had a larger input shaft, and were different around the bearing for 4th gear. $795, USD

http://www.autotech.com/catalog/trangear.htm

When I picked up fspGTD's tranny, autotech didn't have anything but 4.xx R&Ps listed.

I've also heard that the early Omnis with the VW engine ran an 020 derivative tranny. My buddy has a later style Omni, but the repair manual (Chiltons?) shows 020 rod-shift with the oddball center-pushrod clutch in some of the pictures/diagrams.

I've looked thru the wrecker yards but have yet to find one.

I apologize if I placed this thread in the wrong forum.  I was thinking diesel swap -> diesel forum.  Sorry for the trouble.

Well, my Chilton referrs to the A-412 as 'the A412 Volkswagen designed 4-spd.'.  I'm thinking that it's a 4 speed 020.  The search begins on finding a car in good shape, cause I'm not a fan of body work.

Again, if this thread is causing some grief with the other members feel free to remove it.  I'll just post questions once I get the 1.6: diesel mounted.  Thanks.

I'm with Marc on this one...it's a legitimate general-interest VW TD-based thread.

Well I found a guy who's putting a VW diesel into a FWD Dodge, so I'm not the only one!  I verified thru him that using the Omni VW 1.7L gas engine mounts will place the diesel correctly.  And, using the axles for a 1.7L Omni will work too, hooray!  I'm waiting to hear back what transaxle he is using.

There's probably a simple answer to this, but I am wondering who designed/made the early Omni body/chassis? Was it VW under contract to Dodge? Or maybe Mitsubishi? Or was it a Dodge econobox that they simply contracted the drive train to VW?

I'd still like to find a 3.42 r&p for a Mk1 Raggit, tho... :D

It was a Chrysler designed chassis, however at that time VW was contracted to provide engine and transaxle.  It wasn't until 1980(?) I think when Chrysler produced it's own 4 cylinder, the 2.2L.

Well I've got a another Omni to play with, this one with a 'bad engine' as the owner states.  The perfect vehicle to play with putting in a VW diesel, aside from an actual VW.  A few weeks ago I finally got the part numbers to the motor mounts I need, these are used on Omni's with the VW 1.7L gasser.

I also have a VW 020 transaxle, now for some ressearch.

What size fuel line is used on the 1.6L Rabbit diesel engine?  I have some 5/16" & 3/8" stainless I can use.  I also assume there's no return line, correct?  Thanks.

Looks more like 1/4" or 3/16" to me.  Your stuff should be overkill.  There is a return line, at least on mine.  Unless you can deadhead the line coming out of the injector pump without hurting anything.
