get rid of that shifter slop!

for all of the ball and cup sockets in the shift linkage you can easily restore them to better than new condition.

take the cup and ball and clean them very thuroughly. next spray a small ammount of wd40 on the ball. then fill the cup with rtv silicone. (i used the red stuff). place the cup over the ball and position it evenly. wait about 24 hours and then try it out. the rtv displaces any air gaps between the ball and cup so theres basically a prefect slop-free fitting. the wd40 keeps the rtv from sticking to the ball so that it still rotates freely, even though it has no slop.

for the rest of the bushings, the ones which are not ball and cup, just get new ones. its really cheap to replace them.

with these 2 things you can have better than factory shifting action.

option mod are to cut and die the shift shaft to be a few inches shorter which reduces overall throw foreward, reverse and left to right.

and the second mod is to drill a new hole in the linkage ontop the trans and install one of the balls in a new location. this gives a shift throw foreward and reverse throw reduction of anywhere from 20% to 80% depending on how far ya drill the hole off centre.
