I am wondering if the crankshaft in the 1.6l turbo diesel is the same crankshaft in the 1.6l NA diesel engine?

In the older N/A motors it is weaker. I know for sure that VW re-engineered the crankshaft to withstand the extra power from the turbocharging.  Maybe they just manufactured the stronger crankshaft for both N/A and Turbo models after a certain year.

Re: going from N/A to turbo from the TD SAE.:

"A number of changes were made to the crankshaft. The front end of the crankshaft was reinforced. The highly loaded crank-pin, at cylinder 4, has its radius induction hardened and the oil hole ground while radii at the other pins are roll-hardened. A torsional vibration damper is used."

So it sounds like a TD crank would fit in a N/A but you probably wouldn't want to do it the other way.

Thanks for the info. the reason I ask is I am going to build a true turbo diesel and put in my jetta that currently has the eco diesel engine. The crank from the eco was damaged and fixed by a local shop and I will not re use it. I have a good crank from an 89 NA diesel but I think I will look around for a TD crankshaft.
