I'm wondering if my head gasket is going out
« on: June 08, 2006, 06:07:36 am »
I had the big problem 2 weeks ago with the alternator belt blow off, then I believe that it through my injector pump timming off, but not the whole, motor...

I'm not sure on this theory yet, but I replaced the timming belt and tensioner and set it all back to the right time.

The problem is, it runs rough on idle, the smoke is white, but then after a bit it settles out and my engine runs fine when the temp is up, but I can see a little bit of white smoke comming from the exhaust.

Blowby isn't too bad,  lol my 86 NA would pour white smoke out like niagra falls, but it's not even comparable to my 92 turbo diesel.

As for the Turbo, I am very carefull as to cool down time, and run time.
Before my drive home from school, I would let the car idle for 8 -10 min before shutting her down, I know this is iver kill but I was just new to Turbo's.

Now it's based on time after last boost, and then a slow drive in my city and then I let the car idle with the fan and heater on for about 2 min.

It is alot better than my first start up with the belt on, it took a few cranks to start, but I think the pump has a little air in it because I was trying to make sure the timming on the crank, cam and injector pump were perfect.....

As for the head gasket problem, I'm believe my max boost is 25 lbs,  but maybe based on it's material, it is going out, and I may be getting a mix of coolant and oil which coul be based on the white smoke at startup and rough idle, and a little white smoke when normally running.

When the head gasket goes, usually what happens is instead of getting coolant in the cylinders, you get pressure in the cooling system and the coolant resevior cap blows.

Someone on this board is always saying that white smoke means advanced timing, so you might double-check that and/or retard it a little bit.

This fits me theory that the injector pumps timming is off.... :(
