Injection Pump Leaks
« on: June 04, 2006, 08:44:33 am »
I just purchased a 1982 VW Rabbit 1.6 Diesel from a guy for 500 bucks......guy didn't know what he had. Car is in immaculate condition besides one thing. The injection pump leaks fuel when the car is running. It is very difficult at times to start the engine, sometimes it doesn't start and it has to be pull started. I believe it is a gasket that is blown and leaking fuel, however I have no idea how many are involved and if so which one could be the problem? I went to the VW Dealer and he ordered me a seal for it, no idea what one it is, just says on the invoice, "o-ring seal" Please if someone has any idea if this problem is serious or as simple as changing an O-ring seal, please let me know which direction I need to go. Is this something I can fix on my own? Thanks everyone......

I live in Metro-Detroit......I am not sure exactly how the pump works, however, I did find the leak yesterday, I'm not sure exactly if it is the o-ring or not....maybe you can help me determine what it is.....ok...if the pump was on the engine and you were to look directly behind the pump towards the bottom connected to the cold start valve....that would be the oring correct?.....that is where I believe it is leaking from....write back...thanks
