Another newbie here...
« on: May 31, 2006, 09:59:10 am »
... just wanted to know when are the Dieselholic meetings scheduled?   I'll be reading for the first bit to get a few question answered, as I know that it probably has been covered, unless I already know the answers and help others.

A bit about myself:
At the end of March I bought a 1997 Jetta GL (AAZ) with 'only' 204 000 kms on the odo, but the addiction has been around for longer than I can remember. My whole family drives VWs, I'm just the first with a non-gasser. I'm content with the engine as it is... just taking care of some minor issues (electrical, motor mounts, susp) and call it a day. I have now decided that I want to build a 1.6TD (or TDI) engine to use in my ultralight mid-engine 2-seater design that I've been working on for a while (concept in my head). hopefully that wil come to life once I finish my engineering edumacation.

well... I was serious about my threat on the 1.6TD. I just found a complete engine/tranny and is a perfect candidate for a full overhaul. Picking it up next week.

Figured I should provide a picture of my new beater.  8)

to do:
interior
- custom shift boot, e-brake boot (with aesthetic suggestions from mom  )
- CF centre console plate for gauges
- custom rear console
- steering wheel (prefer something OEM i.e. non-airbag GTI)

exterior
- paint grille (slats) black
- Hella aux-light setup (1-pair amber fogs, 1-pair of retina burning driving lights) w/ custom mounts.
- rallye mudflaps

suspension
- bilstein sport struts
- neuspeed sport springs
- strut mounts
- LCA bushings (TT/R32)
- ball joints/tie rods (preventative)
- rear beam-axle bushings
- rear drum brakes/bearings

engine/trans
- engine mounts
I'll wait for the clutch to go to fix the drive seals and the selector shaft seal, but otherwise this one will be left largely stock.

As mentioned above, I've got a deal on a 1.6TD from a friend of mine  that already has an upgraded turbo.
