a/c thermostat question
« on: May 31, 2006, 12:23:05 pm »
Just wondering about the A/C system thermostat and how it works.  I'm assuming its located beside the pressure switch for the compressor on the high pressure A/C hose.

I just recently installed a new condensor, with good o-rings, and no leaks (yay!), but it seems as though my compressor does not cycle off.  The high pressure a/c hose does seem to get hot, but I can still touch it with my hand so I'm also assuming the temp cannot exceed 60C.

I'm guessing that I either have too low of charge, or my temp sensor is broken, if indeed the compressor should be cycling off.

Another thing I noticed is that my fan kicked into a higher speed last night when the a/c was running hotter since the engine was running for about 10 minutes or so, increasing the heat.  Is that all the temp switch on the high pressure A/C hose is for?  Is there another temp switch on the evaporator that controls when the compressor kicks on?  Maybe that is the culprit here...

Too bad I need to wait to get the blower fan resistor before I can start using it for extended periods though

just did some more testing, and the high pres. a/c hose is getting much hotter now.  Still, the compressor is not cycling off.   I'm going to consult the haynes manual to see if there is indeed some kind of temp switch.  If there is, and mine is broken, I will just cycle my system off and be happy it actually works (as long as my a/c clutch holds up!!!).

edit:  Well I just found out what that little sight glass is for.  It looks foamy and that means the charge is too low.  I'll add some more in and see how it goes  :D
