engine rebuild
« on: May 22, 2006, 06:02:31 pm »
Hi I am getting ready to rebuild my 92 Ecodiesel engine and I found this company that sells "master rebuild kits" for the 1.6L ME and MF engines. However I noticed the years listed for the kits were 1985-1987 so I emailed the company and asked them if the kit would be the same for my 92 1.6 engine. Here is the response :
Doug,
I do not know if the MF (1985-87) engine parts will work or not in your
1992 engine. You probably should call your local VW dealership to get
you engine code and ask them that question. But yes the pistons come in
std., .020" and .040".
But I do not show any parts for a 1992 VW diesel engine.
Regards,
Ron LeMmon

I can't exactly ask my local VW dealer because they told me there is no such thing as an Ecodiesel and they never made a turbodiesel until about 1994. I am asking if this kit will work in my 92? By the way it comes with  complete gasket set, set of pistons and rings, main bearings, rod bearings, thrust washers, timing belt, balance shaft bearings (if applicable), and a set of expansion plugs (does not contain camshaft, timing kit or oil pump). Pistons & Rings: Std., .020, .040. Bearings: Std., 10, 20, 30. and an oil pump. http://www.rpmmachine.com/engine-rebuild-kits-volkswagon.shtml

Thanks
Doug

If you look at your block on the IP side, below the IP, just to the right of the water pump, between the center and top hoses of the water pump you'll see your code as casted into the block.

Your VW "dealer" needs help themselves  !!

I hope someone chimes in here that knows exactly, but IIRC your motor should be able to use the "MF" kit as it's for the hydraulic (tappet, '85 & up) motors. I can't remember if the "eco's" had the oil-squirters for the pistons. The "MF" kit's pistons will allow for having them.

Awesome prices though!! :D

Good Luck.

Even though I would not consider North Carolina to be VW diesel country, I get some bonehead responses from local mechanics and parts stores on my ECO.  The local VW "guru" was trying to tell my my car didn't have a turbo until I popped the hood.  Here's a good one...I went into the VW dealer the other day to get an oil filter.  I asked the guy for a 1.6 TD oil filter and he looked at me like I had two heads.  That's why this forum is the best source of correct info on any VW diesel.

Don't worry. Here, when you go ask for Golf G60 parts at VW they say there's no such version.
