need a little help......
« on: May 22, 2006, 01:46:02 am »
At the Moment im getting only 26-27 mpg around town, which is dissapointing ,400kms to about 40 odd litres

Im not sure why ?

I drive alot of small distances ,which probably doesent help, also alot of the time it is barly warmed up by the time i get to my destination.

but it should be better right ?

car goes well otherwise, no problems to report.
plus on the open road im not getting much better ( about 34 mpg) at a average of say... 70 mph.

My cold start lever doesnt seem to make any differance to the running of the engine,Maybe a fraction quieter when cold.

I tend to need to change gear at about 3000 rpm ,to achieve could smooth shifts, but thats only because theres not much power at all untill 2000 rpm. but that shouldnt cause such poor figures.

I have carried out the FAQ mods & am running only 12 psi.
What do you think, pump timing ?
also should i try some of that liquid moly diesel purge treatment ?

Sounds like pump timing, cold-start control makes it QUIETER when cold? Sounds like TOO much static advance. Put the motor at TDC and check all your timing marks that they line up And make sure your cam is timed correctly as well (the notch at the opposite end of the sprocket is level with the edge of the head)

Good Luck

Just poped the bonet tonite after driving home just to check something,& noticed that there is a little bit of diesel being spit around, Im guessing it only happening under load,I cant see it leeking when just running in the drive.

This is good news though,If my pump has finnaly decided to leak, I can get it repaired & then have the timing set ,all under Warranty

Where is it leaking from?  If the tops of the injectors are wet then it's probably your junction between the injector line and the injector base itself.  If it's going to be covered under warranty then don't touch it, but with pump modifications they might be unwilling to honour it.
If so then crack open your lines and retighten each one just snug.  Then dry off the injector with a cloth, start the car and see which ones are leaking.  If one's still leaking then tighten it a bit more.  Keep in mind if you tighten them too much they 'll actually leak more so don't over-do it.
Then check your return lines (the little rubber lines that jump from one injector base to the next) for leaks.  Alot of times that's where the culprit is.  After all of this run a really good diesel injector cleaner in your next tank of fuel.  You can get a good one at a local auto parts store.

That's what did it for me.  I had my mileage come from 450KM/tank to over 700km/tank.  It worked for me.
