Alternator Problem and Interchange ??
« on: May 11, 2006, 04:26:12 am »
The PO on my car accidently hooked up the battery backwards and fried the Voltage Regulator.

It was charging fine for short while now it appears the VR is toast again.

Are the diodes possibly toasted as well or what ??

Also, will alternators from Gassers work OK on a 1.6 Diesel ? Mine has the short shaft for the A/C pulley.

Yeah you can chop and change quite easily.

The gassers don't have the W terminal.

Why not unscrew the reg from the back of the gasser unit and fit it to the diesel one.

You can happily swap parts around between similar alts.

The diode pack should not have cooked from reverse polarity. The VR could have.

Some of the gas alternators DO have a W terminal, went through a few spare parts this week and found one. If the casting is the same, and the pulley lines up with the belt, use it.

I replaced the VR with a brand new one a couple weeks ago and now it has apparently burned out again.

Is the stator possibly shorted on my alternator or what ??

Anyone have a good used one For Sale cheap ??
