Does this need honing/boring
« on: May 08, 2006, 05:00:33 pm »
I bought a cabby with a 1.6TD, bad headgasket so I pulled the head to have a look inside:

Cylinder 1,3 and 4 seems to be fine, 2nd looks a bit rough. I can feel the vertical scrapings... I closed the top vent with my finger (when the head was still on ;)) and the engine started to build up pressure and pushing out oil thru the dipstick.

So my question, do I need to hone/bore? or will new rings and a bit of polishing do the job to get me thru the initial inspection (need low oilconsumption- > free acceleration opacity test) to get the car on the road..

Other option is to drop the 1.9 in and hope they don't complain

There was someone on this board with vertical scoring that was still present even after an overbore and bigger pistons. He ran it anyway and it was fine. So if yours are shallow, you might get away with just a hone and rings without overboring. Depends on how deep the scratches are...

Moved to troubleshooting.  IDI engine is for power enhancement related topics only.

The scratches are visible and you can feel them with your fingers, a fingernail won't fit in the largest score...

I think I'm going to scrap the engine, turbo/head/alt etc are in good shape so I'll sell those to put the €€€ back into the car.

#2 cylinder looks like it has a big indentation at the top at the back.  Did you check to see if the cylinders are round?  That engine looks pretty tired.

I'm scrapping the engine already... all parts I cannot use on my 1.9 are 4 sale. So that leaves only the K24 turbo on my shelf
