check for play,  and you can also just pop the caps off and inspect the bearings visually? I mean, the toughest part of that job is getting the oil pan off.

Be sure to check exhaust manifold for blown gasket. that sound ticks also...
Block exhaust whilst someone checks for leaks...

You need to cut open the oil filter and inspect for amount/type of debris.  This will give you a clue as to where the noise might be coming from.
