Ko3 boost / vs rpm
« on: March 09, 2019, 11:50:18 am »
Guys,
I have a Ko3 turbo on an aaz engine with aaz pump.
I've just recently installed a manual boost controller, and have it adjusted for 16psi max boost. I also have a 1.6TD boost pin installed.

My question is........at what engine rpm should maximum boost be reached?
As is now, at 2500 rpm, boost is at 7 or 8 psi. I would like more boost at lower rpms if possible.

 This is a post from Libby diesel to another member when he was asking the exact same question;

It should boost 15 psi by 1000 rpms or so.  7 psi @ 2500 rpms on a K03 means there is something wrong.

This is a pic of the Ko3 waste gate rod / linkage.
 Is it not adjusted properly?
IF max boost with the Ko3 should be reached by 1000 rpm, what is wrong?

Have you looked at the compressor and turbine to make sure they are both in good condition?  How much play?  Can either wheel rub their housing?  Any intake or exhaust leaks?

Thank you Libby.
I have inspected both turbines, and they look good, no signs of vane damage / rubbing, and very little play in them.... 1mm or less easily.

This is the first time I've run this turbo.......I rebuilt the engine and the turbo came with it, so no past experience with it.

Don't think I have any leaks. I didn't inspect the flapper valve and valve seat for effective sealing [ or not ] tho......this would mean pulling the downtube off for an inspection. I didn't know about this stuff, or anticipate having to troubleshoot the Ko3 when I buttoned her up.

Here is a vid with a T3 on a 1.9.
Can't tell for sure what rpms the boost comes on, but sounds like it's close to 2500 or more.

The T3 is huge compared to the K03 and boost threshold is much higher.  I live at 7000' of elevation (slower boost response) and put a K03 on a 1.6TD and would easily hit 14psi (the max boost I had set) by 1500.

Hummm. If your Ko3 hit max boost at 1500 rpm.........
I wonder my Ko3 is not then??

I just posted the T3 vid to indicate at about what rpms the turbo spools up, with hopes of getting some conversation going on the subject.

I had read the that the gasser Ko3 is different then the diesel spec Ko3......with the gasser turbine being a looser spiral for the faster gas exhaust flow.
I don't think I have a gasser Ko3, as it's the 3 bolt-to-manifold triangle design, which should indicate the diesel designation.

possible it is a gasser which can boost differently. My buddy has modded a few K03 turbine housings for use with the gasser version. I mean my aaz makes full boost around 1500 as well with no wastegate control.

How did you test / determine the the Ko3 boost is full at 1500 rpm?

I did a test on mine yesterday......
4th gear, 1000 rpm, so engine was bogged down and under load.
Then full throttle. At about 1600 rpm, the boost needle hit 18 psi, the wastegate opened, and the boost dropped off right away. As it began to climb again, the rpms had already hit 2000, so the test is essentially over at this point.  This all happens very quickly, in a second or two, and it's tough to try to see both gauges in the same two seconds.

Guessing my Ko3 is working just fine then?
