1.9 ALH good deal or not?
« on: February 10, 2019, 11:40:16 am »
I recently came across a 2003 1.9 ALH with 173,000 miles. It was rolled over and the hood got a little bit of impact as well. I’ve been wanting to buy a 1.9 for a swap but I’m wondering if there could’ve been any damage to the engine? The car turns on and transmission engages however you can’t really drive it because of the rooftop being pushed down from the rollover. Is it common for certain parts to have problems in the future or since it turns on it’s still good?

It's really hard to say.  Flipping a car while it is running is generally really hard on the engine as it will continue to run without oil pressure.  Whether or not it survived without serious damage depends on what exactly happened during the incident.

The guy wants $500 so I’m guessing it would just be a risk.. I’m wondering what would be the worst thing that could’ve messed up but for $500 I might just take it

I would be inclined to buy it.  My logic is that it was fully oiled for awhile before it's abnormal travels.  The engine likely didn't run for long after the disorientation.  So the damage from no oil would be minimal.  I might be more concerned about cracked flanges or oil filter mount torn off.

Sounds like you might have finally found your engine swap.
