I think I just had timing jump on my AAZ....
« on: October 16, 2018, 05:19:34 pm »
About 5000 kms since I installed in my '92 Jetta. Engine had been sitting on the shelf for probably 7 or 8 years after having rings, bearings, gaskets, seals etc. Put it together with a set of head studs. If I remember correctly crank has the new pulley on it like an AHU.
Last couple times I started it it started hard, but smoothed out and ran fine after 5 or 10 seconds. I don't remember if I put new glow plugs in or a set of good used ones, so went to fire it up and put it in the garage tonight to pull glow plugs and check. Ran really rough for 10 or 15 seconds and quit..  Now no fire and nasty noises, I think I have valves bouncing off pistons. Not impressed.
Trying to decide if I want to bother pulling it apart. I need to know why the timing jumped (belt is still on and feels tight enough). Last time I had a head done it wasn't cheap. Same car, different motor that now lives in my Porsche.
Anyone got a good low mileage complete engine in SW Ontario for sale cheap? Or maybe just a good complete head cheap?

You installed the TB 7-8 years ago?  If so, I believe they have a 60k miles or 5 year change interval.

Sitting in a dry trailer, belt is still in one piece. We'll see what I find when I pull it out.

It seems much more likely the cam sprocket slipped position on the cam, than the belt slipped a tooth on the sprocket.  This might explain why it got gradually worse - was slipping a little each time.  Did you follow the cam sprocket install best practices (clean nose of cam and inside sprocket with brake cleaner, torque bolt perfectly, etc.)?

Don't remember. A long time ago. I'm pretty careful about clean on tapered shafts as a rule.. Will get it inside the garage this weekend and figure out what happened.
