External oil cooler hose size
« on: September 30, 2018, 06:44:36 pm »
I have a Vanagon 1983 with 1.6D na engine.  Adding external oil cooler.  I got all fittings from local hydraulic shop.  I thought I was supposed to get 5/8 ID hose, but doing more reading it seems like 1/2" ID is better.  I already bought 5/8".  Is that too big?  Will my oil pressure suffer?  Mounting cooler in front of transmission and using thermostatic sandwich plate.  New to this.  Any feedback greatly appreciated.

I'll try the 5/8 and report back on any issues.

5/8ths sounds to large for my tastes.  That sounds more like water cooling size.  I used a sandwich between the flange and filter for an external Frantz cooler and I think the inside diameter of that hose was closer to 1/4 inch.  Once it got to the external filter it had a sleeve in the inlet that dropped the diameter down to 1/16 I believe.  b
But that particular filter is not designed to have a huge flow going into it.  You are also looking for flow to cool the oil so I would venture a guess that you are a bit big on diameter.  Maybe drop a couple of 8ths and go with a 3/8th if you find you lack pressure.

The oil pump only can produce a given volume depending on RPM.  Flow is a measure of a combination of pressure and diameter of hose.  A given volume will be at a higher pressure with a smaller diameter hose.

Thanks a million.  I have already purchased 5/8 to 3/8 hose reducers.  The fitting for the oil cooler are 5/8 so that is what I was going with but that could be for a Jaguar or something.  Peace

I’ve run 5/8 in the past, with no issues.
