Surge lock needed in 50deg AAZ?
« on: August 14, 2018, 06:57:05 pm »
Is a surge lock needed in a 50 deg AAZ?

Also, what is the correct oil capacity for this setup? When I put 4.5L in, it is about a liter short of the full mark. There is also what appears to be a scribe mark on my dipstick that would be another liter or so to reach.

I don't know what you mean by a 'surge lock'.

Some more description is needed to know how much oil to use.  You say it is 50° so I assume it is in a Vanagon.  There is not any factory spec for a 1.9 in a vanagon installed @50° because they were never installed stock.  Because of that, any quantity is a guess.  4.5 quarts is usually fine unless you are also running an auxiliary oil to air cooler in which case you need to fill the lines and cooler also.  That amount varies depending on the install.  One thing that I have found on multiple TD/TDI vanagons is that if the level gets low then when you transition from cruise to acceleration, if you watch the boost gauge, the oil pressure will drop or not increase as linearly relative to RPM.  This is especially obvious when the engine is cold.  Just above where it does that is just right.  You want to be above where that occurs.

Surge lock is whats the parts catalog calls the baffle/gasket combo like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Oil-Pan-Baffle-Gasket-037-115-220B/282088876630?hash=item41adceaa56:g:lFgAAOSwBjdZ5koA

Mine didn't have one, only a gasket,  but it is called out for an AAZ. I am unsure of the splash implications in this orientation. It seemed find without the baffle so I may just keep it gasket only unless someone thinks it'll be beneficial.

Yes its in a Vanagon.

In regards to capacity, I'll get a picture of the oil pickup and dipstick when I remove the pan again.

If the oil pickup is stock diesel vanagon then I am familiar with it.  Is the dipstick the stock diesel vanagon one as well?

I believe that the windage tray is beneficial in the Vanagon.  I have fit them to several TD/TDI Vanagon conversions.
