Mk2 Jetta 1.6d non turbo fan stays running sometimes after car is off

Ok so it’s an 85 Jetta coupe 1.6 diesel non turbo all stock.

Sometimes when I shut the car off and take the key out the fan will continue to run an additional minute or so afterward. I don’t mind this at all but I’m curious if it’s supposed to do that. Anyone know?

I’ve ran into newer cars that do this but they are computer controlled and high performance. This seems excessive for a diesel that barley makes it to the half way line on the gauge. Both top and bottom hoses are equally warm.

It is normal for the fan to run after the engine is off.  Any time the temperature at the coolant temp switch in the radiator exceeds the switch's target temperature, the fan turns on regardless of whether or not the engine is running or ignition is on.

That’s a good feature and what I was hoping, thank you.

Keep your fingers out of there when the engine is hot !! Some times it takes a minute or so to come on after shutting down. Easy to do if leaning over to inspect into the engine bay.

It scares the crap out of me when it comes on like that way after I shut it down.  The heat soak finally brings up the switch on the radiator and about that time I am reaching into the engine bay after something like the vacuum pump and whoa! get back!  OH yeah, just the fan again.
