Diameter of AAZ dipstick tube hole?
« on: May 27, 2018, 11:47:35 pm »
I need a dipstick for my AAZ in a Vanagon, so I can check from the license plate door. So far I am using the vertical one that came with the Jetta, but its not too convenient getting in from the top.

If you have an AAZ block sitting around, can someone measure the diameter of the hole, not the diameter of the tube going in? I want to verify the size of pipe I need before starting the job.

Also, can I expect to be able with some mechanical advantage to yank the old tube out?

According to my measurements, the tube part that pokes into the block measures 10.1mm  or 0.399".  The tube is knurled and it is a darn tight fit into the block.  I don't know how much trouble you will face trying to pull it from above.  I have always pulled the pan and used a punch to hammer it out.

Thanks for measuring that Andrew. I am hoping my metal guy can put a slide hammer around that thing and yank it out. It looks like a standard dipstick tube is ⅜" .375 which is 9.52mm, so any old tube should fit in there with a little knurling and glue.

Do you know if the TDi dipstick and tube work with AAZ?

AHU (Mk3 TDI) and AAZ dipstick tubes and dipsticks are the same.  If memory serves, the ALH (mk4) is larger.  For install into a vanagon, you're going to need a custom dipstick or could use the stock '83+ diesel vanagon tube but would need to bush it where it goes into the block and rig mounting at the alt.

My metal guy welded a slide hammer extension on the tube and it came out with 2 whacks. For future info, you can't rotate the dipstick tube out of there because it is vertically splined, you have to pull it up.

I made a rudimentary dipstick out of the springy frame of a windshield sunshade. I don't know where the marks go, that will have to be determined empirically.
