How to Tell 1.6 Heads Apart
« on: June 09, 2018, 08:29:04 am »
If you are looking at a bunch of 1.6 heads, is there any easy way to tell the earlier 11mm heads from the later 12mm heads?

Can you put an older heads on a newer block?

I thought this would be in commonly asked questions, but can't find it. Thanks.

Can a 12mm bolt fit thru an 11mm head, can I take a bolt along, and if it fits it's newer if it doesn't it's older, or is the difference not that much?

Ruby Doom,

The bolts are actually different at the head.  The older 11 mm ones used a 6 sided hex to get them in and out.  The newer 12 mm ones use the triple hex head.

Can the older head be checked with the newer larger bolt?  I don't think so, it is only one mm and I think those holes on the older head will allow those 12 mm bolts to go though the holes.  Someone that has both might tell us different if that is the case.

But if someone hands you a head off the block and you want to age it properly there isn't anyway to turn it over and have it tell you how old it is.  Perhaps the part number is a key?  Could it be that newer heads have one of the numbers different?

Can you put an older head on the newer block?  I would think so if the 12mm bolt passes through it.  They are longer and yield when you torque them up tight but the head thickness is the same.

Oh OK, all I could glean from the Bentley manual was that the valve guides are a different distance apart, so you need a different tool for doing the adjustment?

I've got two part numbers of two separate heads, and neither matches the number from mine, so I'm a little bamboozled, how many casting numbers could there be?

My head is 068 103 373 B and it had the star head style bolts.

You think either of these might fit the block?

For the benefit of anyone who arrives here via Google or some future search engine, both the above heads turned out to be petrol, not diesel heads. The seller had been misinformed and didn't know the difference.

Yeah, a "B" head is 11mm
an "F" head is 12mm along with a few others.
going by the letter at the end of the part number.
This is a general rule that I've almost always found to be accurate,... unless someone has bored out a "B" head to fit 12mm bolts.
