rover 200/300tdi pump potential?
« on: April 26, 2018, 04:34:53 pm »
hey guys. I have an aaz in my Tacoma with a he220wg. Been kind of playing with the idea of going mtdi for more power and better efficiency. Was just curious what kind of power you can get from an alh or ahu with a rover pump without major pump mods? I've searched around google but havn't really been able to find any concrete answers. Looking to get the most power without sacrificing reliability. How much can these motors handle usually? I don't mind investing in arp hardware where necessary but I don't plan on building a full on racing motor with stronger rods and pistons and block girdle... Is there any benefit to ahu or alh over one another in regards to performance or reliability?

I figure my aaz is good for about 150-175hp, if I could get 250hp reliably that would be amazing!

Someone more knowledgeable might chime in, but I think 200ish hp is widely regarded as the ceiling for stock internals.

The Land Rover 300TDI was a 2.5L engine, much larger than the 1.9L AHU, 1Z, ALH, etc, so you would think it would be capable of significantly more fueling, which it likely is. Although I think the VW TDI's are significantly more efficient than an older Rover design, the 300TDI 2.5L made 111hp & 195ft-lbs stock, but was reported to get noticeably lesser fuel economy than the earlier version the 200TDI.
Also, the 300TDI Bosch VE pump is the one that supposedly needs the governor modded, as it cuts fueling too early to rev out like the TDI should.
I believe people will just take the entire governor assembly out of the VW TDI electronic pump, & swap it into the Rover pump, but the camplate etc is usually left as Rover parts.
I have also read of others just modifying the springs in the Rover governor assembly for acceptable results.
Supposedly the earlier version Land Rover 200TDI pumps do not have the limiting governor.

I'm guessing a stock Rover pump with governor modded could be easily turned up to more than enough fueling to make my lower end goal of 150hp with no further internal mods. I'm looking at tops 175hp, as in a heavier loaded vehicle like a Samurai 4x4 rig (heavier use & drivetrain/tire load vs passenger car) or  Tacoma, I think 180-ish hp is the really safe cutoff for reliable power, and  trying to go from 180 to 200+ hp in any VW TDI is the hardest 20 or 30hp+ to attain, and 200hp is considered tops for a reliable lightweight passenger car application on 1Z/AHU/ALH. The PD engines came with tougher rods and upgraded pistons, so they can handle more power, especially the 04-05 Passat BHW 2.0L after the BSM delete kit is retrofit and aftermarket cams swapped. Not possible to go mTDI on those top ends, but with ALH heads and some mods, you can go Bosch VE mechanical pump. Or run the rotating assemblies in an ALH block. See my thread in the general TDI sub forum about building a bulletproof ALH bottom end.

I'm no expert on diesel injection pumps yet, but reading up as much as possible while my broken kneecap bones are healing, in anticipation of swapping this ALH into my 88 Suzuki Samurai with a GT2052 turbo and Land Rover 300TDI pump, as well as Toyota V6 R-150/151 series transmission (still shopping for trans, as well as t-case options).

I'm shooting for 145-175hp and 225-275ft-lbs, but rock-solid reliable as I am looking into building a second ALH with fresh bores and deck surfaces, stronger more advanced rods and pistons, and a fresh head, so that I can use it in a 4x4 that may see some hauling of dirt bikes on a 4x8 utility trailer, firewood, misc. utilitarian hauling, etc for 250,000+ miles with no failures.
This will be light years ahead of the 100hp/110ft-lbs that was the max easily attainable out of the little 185lb 1.6L Suzuki gasser. Great engine for the Samurai, but I was thirsty for more via VW turbodiesel before I even bought this Samurai

The real question I have is the clutch.... Are there better options than what Frans is offering?
