ALH M-TDI Rover 300TDI Pump GT2052 - just smoke, no power
« on: May 23, 2019, 07:28:17 am »
Hi guys,
I built an ALH M-TDI with Rover 300TDI Pump, governor mod, Bosio race520 (0,260) nozzles and GT2052 Wastegate Turbo at 26 PSI and big intercooler.  The timing is set to 1.45.

My problem is, that I easily got about 120hp right from the start. Tweaking the settings on the pump helped me to get another 10-20hp, so I now might have 140hp.
This is less than I expected with my setup. I was hoping for 180-190hp.

Unfortunately I just get tons of smoke if I allow more fuel.
With an electronic pump 190hp at 26PSI are an easy job. I wonder why I cant manage to get this power with the Landrover pump.

Do you think it is the timing? The engine starts and runs absolutely smooth.

Thanks for your help.

I’m in the process of setting up my first Mtdi setup on an AHU. I also have a 300 pump a few things I’ve read suggested differences in timing  between EGR pumps and non EGR pumps. I know the big Mtdi thread has something about it. The fine timing could easily be off. I think something like 1.54mm is what you’re looking for with a non EGR pump.

Add a bit more timing. I had my belt off on 1.9 AAZ and when I reinstalled it I didn't understand how the pump sprocket worked and I set the timing back a bit. I was getting tons of smoke and very limited power. Advanced the timing cleaned it right up. I've learned that the timing setting being measured is based on a perfect pump and injectors. Things wear out. Tune it by ear and see how it goes!
