1.6 td alternator wiring swap
« on: January 17, 2018, 11:07:28 pm »
Hate to post this but all the pictures are not on the threads! Very hard to understand what they are saying.

I got a 1992/1991 probably eco 1.6 td in my mk1.

Has 2 red wires going to a bolt. And the blue exciter wire. I added ground from casing to body of truck and replaced regulator/brushes and cleaned up battery grounds.

Nothing! No change in voltage while car running.

Does wiring sound good?

Either replace diode or entire alternator or seriously check the wiring.

Thanks

Does it start charging if you really rev it up? If so it’s an exciter wire issue.

Thanks Tmarkle. No change in voltage.

Autozone alternator checker says battery to low to check alternator. But voltage doesn't change at all.

The Bentley has a procedure for doing a series of tests on the alternator wiring and what the typical voltage is when running.  Do you have that book for reference?

If I remember correctly the alternator on the eco engine should be putting out between 13.5-14 volts to be considered a "good" alternator. That being said you should also have 12v coming from the blue wire

I don't have Bently but I took alternator to a tester and I watched them hook it up and everything was bad. Rusty from Germany.

I could Swap my bracket from my 1981 1.6 na. But to get the bracket off the 1992 td there are 2 bolts behind the bracket and under the pump so I would have to take entire pump off to get to those bolts. Unless it's like my 81 na where the 2 bolts are in the water pump housing and I just take the water pump housing off ...?

I don't have tools to time pump and had to Limp to shop with untimed pump last time I took belt/pump off.

None of my local parts store can get the alternator either :/

Many threads saying just get swivel for one hidden bolt and one guy says heat up and bend wrench for the other. Ok!

Swapped the 1981 1.6 na bracket. Works.

To get the bolts out of the 1.6 td 1992 alternator bracket use swivel socket and extension for both. Swivel socket is rotates like 60 degrees and still works.

So you don't have a local alternator/starter rebuilder?

Lotta local shops are gone now, even in bigger towns.

I'd pop for a Bosch reman and get some penetrating oil onto the pulley nut (you're gonna need that pulley and fan stuff).
