Bought a done up ahu, what else should I upgrade??
« on: November 15, 2017, 02:49:20 pm »
Hey guys. New to Tdi engines. I've purchased a 1998 ahu with the following upgrades
Malone stage 4 tune
Garret gt 2052 turbo
Bosio r520 injectors
Stage 3 colt cam
11mm pump (if i recall correctly)
PD intake
Arp head studs

What else should I upgrade to make reliable use out of this engine?? Are rods and piston nessesary? Will not be a daily driver.

Thanks guys!

Good score!

The bottom end is good up to around 180ish HP, if you're below 25 or so PSI you'll be fine with what you have.

Is it still using the stock intercooler?

Thanks! The engine cost me 800$! It is stock intercooler, should I consider upgrade?? I also hear talk of guys shredding engines due to main bolts letting go.  Should I consider upgrades here as well?
Thanks for the reply!

The stock IC is a weak spot if you plan to make any significant power for more than a few seconds. It'll heat soak under sustained high boost.

Main studs are certainly a good idea, though I'm not sure if I'd pull things apart to do them.

Boy that is a nice score! Let me know how you like that GT2052, I've heard great things about them! One possible thought when it comes to upgrades is a ported head. The only reason I say this is because you have a Stage 3 cam and I've heard (no practical experience here) that you won't reap the benefits of a staged cam unless you start improving airflow through the head. Now obviously porting is way expensive and the results vary (people go both ways on whether it makes a difference or not). Anyways, just a thought since you have it.

Good luck man!

Thanks! And yes, great idea. I have a spare head that came with, I should send away for port. I will scan forum for best VW porters.

Franko6 on TDIclub is pretty much the go-to for head work. Let us know if you find anyone else!

I've also heard good things about Frank. Heard of a place called 'Passengers Performance' too (from some of Darkside Developments work over in England). I believe the guys name was Dave, some where up in BC. Not sure if he still does work or not.

I'm actually currently doing a mild port and polish on my ALH head. Its ALOT of work and takes time, so don't expect it to be cheap especially if you really start opening it up.

I don't believe Passenger is still doing anything for VW unfortunately. He was doing it around 10 years ago.
