Here’s how the 1.5 in my rabbit is set up without a vacuum pump. Brakes are a pain without it though.

Is there anything to support the top of the gear/oil pump shaft from deflecting?

Steve.
The oil pump shaft has one of the gears as part of it and it is a very close tolerance machined fit where it runs through the oil pump case. There is another oil pump shaft bushing that it pressure oiled near the top of the shaft.
