Poping out of 3rd gear

hey guys just got my 1995 Golf 1.9TD and its working alwirght other then the fact when i shift down from 4th gear it will go into 3rd then when i release the clutch pop back out and grind for a moment.I'm really hoping this is not a sirius problem and i would really apreciate it if someone could tell me why its doing this.oh yeah and it doesent do it if i double clutch on before putting it in gear or when going up though the gears only on downshifts.Thanks in advance

hmmm only on downshifts....  I would say if you're concerned about it then I'd start with checking the linkage before I started fearing the worst.  If the linkage is at all loose it may not be pushing the shift rod far enough and as soon as you let out the clutch, if it's not far enough into gear, it will grind itself out.
But only on downshifts, .......hmmm.

Yeah im gonna check the linkage this afternoon. And i find it odd too cant figure out why it would only do it on downshifts. Theres gotta be someone out there who can give an explanation. Anyone?

Just a hunch, but could it be that it has more to do with decelerating in third then downshifting to third.     Try upshifting from 2nd to 3rd, and then let off the gas right away and see if it pops out.

Is the popping also associated with a "thunk" I'm thinking broken mount somewhere. Check the rear one right on top of the tranny.

No, there is no "thunk" just pops out and grinds.
Oh and if i shift in to third and then lt off the gas real quik it stays in gear.
