020 swap now tranny grumbling
« on: August 29, 2017, 08:28:32 am »
So my 020 code AWY decided to toss a rivet a few days ago. I swapping in an AUG code tranny that has the identical gear set except the differential. Below a certain rpm the tranny make a horrible low grumbling noise, almost sounds like a noisy differential. Tranny has 200,000 miles on it. Any ideas?

Do you think it's toast? The thing is smooth shifting. It's fine as long as I'm going above 10 mph in 1st, 20mph in 2nd 30mph in 3rd 40mph in 4th and 50 mph in 5th.  I mean the difference between a 3.94 and 3.67 differential is quite the jump. The AUG came out of a gas car. Im starting to think that with the gearing I'm almost lugging the motor/tranny if I go below those numbers. The AWY allowed for some crazy short shifts but not so much with the AUG code tranny.

Bad diff bearings on the one in the car by the sounds of it. Rebuild whichever one you liked the best.
