AAZ with CJF Gearbox
« on: August 15, 2017, 11:09:01 am »
Greetings,

I've bought an Golf Mk2 5-Door to be my first project , I've been tunning it through all of the tutorials here and I must say thank you for giving me knowledge to do things DIY!! First of all very gratefull!!

Well with the mods, it pulls very quickly!!! I'll swich the BoostPin from Vento to Golf but in spite of the power gain, the Golf will do some smoke I think...

Here's a video I uploaded to you guys see (I was alone an eager to test the damn car so, not very good quality video)

https://youtu.be/TpIsBug5bPo

The previous owner had to replace the gearbox and the guy who replaced it installed an Gearbox from an Mk3 Golf GT 1.6L... So damn short (max speed 170Km/h) Wich gearbox should I use? Can I install and ASD or an CTN from TDI ?

And here's a pick from the Golf right know (behind it it's the Vento that I manage to get for parts)

What do you think?

Regards

Ismael Fernandes

Nice! That thing pulls pretty hard! Are you keeping and eye in egts? How much boost are you making?

Thanks RunninWild!! Well I do not have any Gauge installed 'cause police officers might get curious, if you know what I mean... but I did some testing before take them out!! If I push the engine too hard can reach 1450/1500°F  But running slow is stable at 1200°F!
I'm using an KKK14 doing 16.5PSI (can reach 18PSI Peak no Intercooler) and pump is very well tuned by a friend of mine without boostpin, also rebuilt by bosch (don't have cash for Giles work right now and I'm from Portugal so...) but what I really want is an longer gearbox for doing highway on the lowest RPM possible on 5th gear...

I have a Boostpin like this one inside the Vento, this looks quite standard cone form , but it gave some aggressive low RPM boost with a T15 Turbo without cutting the stock spring... wich are the best boostpins out there ? Does the spring also affects performance / fuel effiency ?

Hello !

If you want an ASD or CTN gearbox (like me but i have an AAZ MK3 golf so it's much complicated with the electronical speedometer) you need:

- Replace your clutch pedal for hydrolic conversion, OR instal a kit for a passat cable

- Install a cable gear lever, OR a kit for linkage on 02A gearbox

- Found a passat mechanical speedometer drive, i asume the cable is the same between mk2 and passat with 02A gearbox

- Install a 02A type flywheel and clutch

With all this i think you will be good !

Thank you so much Bigmick77380 for sharing your work!!! So if I somehow get an mk3 golf tdi I can swap the respective parts ? Or do I need some mods to fit all in ?

You are welcom !

Not all, you can swap:
-The flywheel with the clutch
-The cable gear lever with little modification, you need to drill some fixation hole ( the box under the gear lever is a little bit longer than the original)
-The clutch pedal (need to drill throug the firewall for the hydrolic system, a presume you also need to replace all the pedal (not sure, i never do that, just read about it)

For the speedo, you NEED to have the mechanical drive, you can find it on passat b3 (not sur if it's the b3) or on corrado (according to what vanbcguy said to me)

I advise you for easy swap to:

-take the mk3 tdi flywheel, clutch and cable gear lever
-keep your clutch pedal system with a custom cable clutch (if i found one i send you what i'm talking about) with a passat clutch cable
-And of course take the speedo mechanic drive of the passat

For me that's the simple way because with this, you don't need to mod the pedal and the firewall.

PS: that's not my work, i just read a lot of thread about vw mods ;) i dont do it for now, but it is a project :)

PS2: Do you know how your pump is clocked ? i want to build a 10mm pump but i have some question about dynamic advance...

Ooh man, I just took all your tips to an word doc just to not lose this info... Been searching for quite a while and since I didn't find much of instructions, I decided to get some help here!! Millions of thanks!!!! You guys are the best!!!! Thanks once again Bigmick77380 and RunninWild for the support!!

Well, I'll wait a couple of months to save a budget to buy all the parts I need to do this mod!! By the way Bigmick, how's your experience running this config ? Power, how fast it goes with your tunning and of course mileage...

Well the pump does not have my hands on it... The only thing I'll do in a few days (when I got an day off, working so hard these days...) is swich the boostpin from the Vento to Golf... I've been seen videos read some pages on a bosch ve manual but too much for me... I've learning IDI since I own one and thats all the knowledge I have on cars

You are welcom ;)

But i dont do this mod (for this moment), i only read few post about it (i will search you the one who talk aboute the same car than yours with a tdi gearbox (if i found it)

I hope this mod provide good mileage, what i know is that the three first gear are nearly the same than the original aaz gearbox (the 3rd is a littlebit longer i think...)

PS: i forgot an important thing, check your drive shaft (if you have a mk3 gt gear box if think it will be good but...) you need the 100mm driveshaft with the 02A gearbox, not the 90mm !!!

A post who talk about this mod : http://www.20vt.lt/index.php/how-to/32-conversion-to-02j

The piece you need for cable clutch conversion : https://www.bolt-action.nl/product/vw-02a-cable-clutch-actuator/

All the piece can be found on VAG car, all is OEM pieces.

I think that's all
