Manual Adjust Clutch Cable Substitution
« on: July 05, 2017, 07:47:20 pm »
Can I replace the self-adjusting clutch cable with a manually adjustable version??

My Bentley's manual(VG92) talks about both, but states "The two cables are not interchangeable."
It seems that the small parts (28, 29, 30) are no longer avaliable. Are they necessary for the manual cable???
PS: on closer inspection, it looks like there are similar parts on my auto-adjust cable, so they may fit the manual cable????

Can the auto-adjust cable be "reset" and reused if it's in good shape and I can't get the above parts for the manual conversion???

PS: I pushed back the boot on the cable spring and fiddled with it until I could compress the spring and release the "clutches" that grab the cable. I then tied the spring (compressed) with some wire; installed it and then cut off the wire. Per Bentley, I worked the clutch pedal a few times and, voila!!!, nice pedal with a nominal amount of free play. Still I may go with the manual cable.

What say the gurus?????

yes you can replace it from what I have done. Different models maybe different but I would think an MK2 is an MK2 and an 020 is an 020 for the most part.

looking at your pic, both the pedals look the same, so it shouldnt be a problem there to get cable on, on the other end its the arm on the trans, the manual cable is a simple attachment there. i think its just slip ball thru and put 'base' on other side.

Thanks, all !!

For now I will adopt the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" method. I think the pedal end of the cable might be wearing out as it is plastic/nylon. I'll deal with that later. It has been 300,000 mile for this cable !!!
I detached the clutch lever end at the tranny and reset the self-adjuster. It actually worked quite well to adjust the free play.
I would like to go back to the manual adjuster, but that's low on the list for now.
