25psi boost, rebuilt k14, ARP studs and AAZ MLS
« on: July 03, 2017, 12:29:52 am »
Hi guys.
As the subject says, these are the basic specs on my SB turbo diesel.
My question, is 25 psi too much for the stock internals??
I hope my conrods won't start bending anytime soon??

What motor are you running? 1.6 solid lifter or hydraulic?

There are guys on here that push their motors further... I built mine to the same specs as you. Plan is to run 20ish pounds of boost in my motor, but I also plummed in an AWIC.

Make sure to add an EGT sensor so you can keep track of the heat. That will be your biggest enemy.

I built my motor based on what the guys here are doing successfully. I haven't had the chance to run that motor yet. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I will be finally putting the motor in to the car,  and see if what I did is reliable. I had Giles build my injectors and pump to push the motor to 6k with 30' of boost.

The first thing that will go with your motor will probably be your head gasket before your connecting rods. I only speak from what I've read not from experience.

I'm running a FMIC. And it's a hydraulic motor. SB code.
I also have an EGT gauge. And oil temp. Along with boost of course.
Haven't really been able to do a prolonged run while monitoring these things. Since my CV boots are busted. The requisite parts are on the way. From US to Pakistan.
Additionally I'm also changing the thermostat to 80deg unit, and fan switch to 85deg unit. Because I feel that the stock 87deg thermostat and the 95deg fan switch are not exactly ideal for the Pakistan heat.
I've also changed the fan to an AAZ unit. With the 1st and 3 speed wired up. For more efficient cooling.

I think you'll be alright with that setup. 25psi from a k14 is on the upper limit for that turbo if I remember right. Do you have any mods to the injection pump? Like grooves mentioned egt is going to be the biggest problem. If you can get it to push that much boost/fuel with acceptable egt's you shouldn't really need to worry about the internals.

The max EGT I've seen up till now has been 750 degrees Celsius.
Pump is stock, with gov mod, two copper washers..
And the turbo was recently rebuilt by gpopshop. They asked me if I wanted an OEM rebuild costing $390 or HAD rebuild, costing $510. I chose HD. So, I'm hoping it'll hold on at 25psi

I assume your EGT probe is pre-turbine.  Regardless, 1400°F sustained will kill your engine fairly quickly.  Cause of death will likely be a prechamber insert cracking and falling into the cylinder or cracks from exhaust valves to prechambers.  If your probe is post turbine, then your EGTs are waaayyy too high.  25 psi is very inefficient for the K14.  If you are running that much boost, IMO, it is the wrong turbo to use.

The EGT probe is pre turbine. In the manifold where all four chambers meet before entering turbo.

So as far as I understand, I should reduce boost and fueling so max EGT is 650-700deg C?!?!?

If you reduce both fuel and air (boost) proportionately, your EGTs will not change.  You need to reduce fuel and/or increase air to lower EGTs.  I think 1250°F (675°C) sustained is a good target.

EGTs climb as fuel to air ratio increases, if the ratio stays the same, you get same EGTs
Going fast never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary, thats what gets ya

I've been running a T3 to 26psi for over 6 years now and have had no issues at all with an AAZ.

Turbo is a goner.
It was making a weird sound for the last couple of days. Yesterday I removed IC hose and it was spitting oil like a bastard.
Considering changing turbo to T3.
Or going TDI. Will be writing to gpopshop too.
It last a 600km since rebuild.

also you have a good engine i wouldn't go through all the cost and work of swapping to a tdi unless if the engine is dead. Swap to a t3 or he200wg. t3 will be the easiest and cheapest, he200wg will be the best but still priced quite well.  Also hello to you in pakistan, i have a friend who lives in rawalpindi.

Does your friend have a name??
If he owns a golf, then I might know him.
