My TDI was totaled. Do I buy it?
« on: March 01, 2017, 11:54:39 am »
My 2014 Passat manual (SE) was totaled, and the insurance company has offered it for sale for $3800. All airbags except the passenger front have deployed. I have no interest in spending a ton of time parting it out and do not want to repair it, but I would be interested in using the engine for a project and wouldn't mind parting out major components like the seats. The car has 43,000 miles and the turbo has been replaced due to that common issue.

1. Is it feasible and economical to make the TDI a standalone engine for use in another project? Probably deleting the DEF system.

2. Should I buy it? Why or why not? :)

I don't know about the newest engines, I know you can delete the DPF but I don't know what is involved. Find the marginal utility of what you want to do and see if the 3,800 is a win for you.

Depending on your project, you might need to spend more.
